Turkish Research Vessel Oruc Reis Conducts Gas Pipeline Studies Off Occupied Kyrenia Coast
The Turkish research vessel Oruc Reis has begun a new phase of investigations off the coast of occupied Kyrenia, focusing on the proposed natural gas pipeline between Turkey and the occupied territories. The project aims to complete mechanical studies by 2026 and start pipeline operations by 2028.
According to latest reports, the vessel is conducting research between the southern Turkish coast and northern Cyprus in line with a NAVTEX issued for October 1–25. The pipeline, known as Anamur-Tekneciik, will run approximately 101 kilometers, primarily under the sea, with two 22-inch diameter lines transporting gas.
Initially, the transported natural gas will generate electricity in the occupied areas, aiming to reduce dependence on liquid fuels and lower electricity costs. Long-term plans include a bidirectional flow capability to potentially allow East Mediterranean natural gas, if discovered, to be sent to Turkey via this network.
