Cyprus urges balanced migration policy combining protection and combatting irregular migration
Deputy Migration Minister Nicholas Ioannides highlighted the necessity of a "balanced and sustainable" migration policy during the MigraMed conference in Nicosia. He emphasized that migration management is a delicate balance between protecting those in genuine need and addressing irregular migration, human trafficking, and ensuring effective repatriations. Cooperation between origin, transit, and destination countries, as well as civil society organizations, is essential to this effort.
Ioannides also pointed to the collaboration between Cyprus and Italy in tackling challenges faced by EU member states on the Mediterranean’s external borders. Italian Ambassador Antonella Cavallari stressed the importance of the human dimension of migration, reminding that behind migration statistics are individuals and families whose stories must not be overlooked. She urged viewing migration not only as a challenge but also as an opportunity under the right conditions.
Nicosia Mayor Charalambos Prountzos called for moving beyond stereotypes, highlighting migrants' meaningful economic contributions, particularly in sectors with labour shortages. He addressed the urban challenges in Nicosia, such as overcrowded housing and exploitation by landlords, and recommended legislative action targeting those who exploit migrants as well as the migrants themselves.
