Six state hospital unions in Cyprus seek member approval for potential industrial action after failed SHSO talks

Six state hospital unions in Cyprus will begin meetings with their members on Thursday to seek authorisation for possible industrial action following unsuccessful negotiations with the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO) over a new collective agreement. The unions had their last meeting with SHSO management on September 30, which ended without a deal.

Afterwards, the unions sent a joint, final proposal to the SHSO and have requested a written response by Friday, October 16. They have also called for an urgent meeting between union leaders and the SHSO board in a bid to reach an agreement. The proposal includes a two-year contract renewal with specific pay rises and sets a timetable to resolve salary scale issues by mid-2027, with new scales to take effect January 1, 2028.

No decisions have been made regarding the timing or form of any industrial action yet. The initial meetings will involve SHSO head office staff and workers at Nicosia General Hospital, with discussions planned across other districts thereafter. The unions warn that if no agreement is reached, they will consider all appropriate and lawful measures, including strikes, as they did in previous negotiations.
