Unions Criticise Cyprus Post Director Over Employment and Working Conditions Amid Delivery Round Changes

Unions have criticised the director of Cyprus Post before parliament’s transport committee concerning the employment status and working conditions of postal delivery staff. The dispute arose after the director proposed reducing delivery rounds in urban areas from 181 to 137, citing a 50% decline in letter volumes since 2015. The proposal has prompted concerns over understaffing, pay disparities, and the impact on service to the public.

During the hearing, union representatives highlighted issues such as differing employment contracts, lack of replacement staff, and increased workloads. They also raised safety concerns, including incidents like a postman’s bag catching fire. Unions called for improved communication with management, fair overtime pay, safer working conditions, and protection against adverse weather.

Committee chairman Sotiris Ioannou announced the matter will return to parliament in early November, with invitations extended to the Cyprus Post director and a senior Transport Ministry official to discuss the ongoing challenges and potential solutions.
