Water reservoirs in Cyprus at 35.6% capacity with significant improvement from last year
Cyprus's water reservoirs currently hold 35.6% of their total capacity, marking a significant increase compared to 11.9% during the same period last year. As of October, the total stored water amounts to 103.386 million cubic meters, demonstrating a recovery in water levels following beneficial rainfall this month.
The reservoir with the highest capacity is Kalopanayiotis, at 100%, followed by Xyliatos at 75.2% and Vyzakia at 72%. The Kouris reservoir, the largest in Cyprus with a capacity of 115 million cubic meters, currently stores 42.467 million cubic meters, up from 12.581 million cubic meters last October. Despite this improvement, water levels remain below those recorded in 2022.
Data from the Water Development Department indicates that while this year's inflows have improved to 117.091 million cubic meters, they are still lower compared to previous years such as 2018-2019, which saw inflows of 265.04 million cubic meters. Overall, water reserves have been recovering but remain considerably below the levels seen in earlier years.
