Twenty-fourth body recovered from Kyrenia ferry sinking as search continues

Rescue teams recovered the twenty-fourth body from the sea off Kyrenia's coast amid ongoing search operations following the ferry sinking on August 30. The ferry, carrying 259 passengers and eight crew members, sank shortly after departing from Kyrenia to Tasucu. Four people remain unaccounted for.

Authorities recently identified four bodies found since the weekend, including two recovered on Tuesday identified as Mahmut Demir and Ozgur Gonul. The ferry’s captain Mustafa Oz, seven crew members, and a company representative remain in custody on charges related to the tragedy.

Court hearings revealed a crack in the ferry was repaired in Cyprus without informing Turkish Cypriot authorities, despite regulatory obligations. The repairs took place shortly after the ferry was certified seaworthy by Turk Loydu, raising questions about the ship’s certificate and the legitimacy of the captain’s licence, which police allege was purchased illegally.
