Cyprus to invest over €200 million in water infrastructure upgrades by 2030

Cyprus plans to invest more than €200 million by 2030 to upgrade its water infrastructure, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis announced. The move aims to address long-term water challenges exacerbated by climate change and prolonged droughts. Measures will focus on new infrastructure, improving desalination units, reducing water network losses, and better utilizing reclaimed water for irrigation.

Senekis highlighted that the government has allocated an additional 3.5 million cubic meters of water for irrigation, bringing the total extra supply to 7 million cubic meters by 2026. This is part of broader efforts to support farmers amid difficult weather conditions and ensure the sustainability of the agricultural sector.

In addition to water initiatives, emergency support plans totaling €1.5 million were approved to help farmers with rising fertilizer and fuel costs. The ministry also outlined a strategic agricultural policy plan for 2023-2027 with €454 million in funding aimed at promoting innovation, competitiveness, and resilience in Cypriot agriculture. Senekis emphasized the importance of preserving rural farming for both economic and community sustainability.
