Civil Society Organisations in Cyprus Unite to Combat Racism through Education

On 20 September, the Association for Historical Dialogue and Research (AHDR), the Home for Cooperation (H4C), and 15 other civil society organisations signed a Commitment to Action for Anti-Racist Education in Cyprus. The agreement was made during a panel discussion marking the International Day of Peace, focusing on addressing racism and discrimination through education. The signatories acknowledged that racism, prejudice, and exclusion threaten human dignity, rights, and social harmony, calling for the inclusion of marginalized communities in the dialogue and actions.

AHDR director Loizos Loukaidis emphasized the need for collaborative efforts, noting that racism intersects across different social spheres and efforts should not be fragmented. Panicos Pourgourides highlighted the role of education and strong partnerships, referencing the EU Anti-Racism Strategy 2026-2030, while Ahmet Guneyli stressed the importance of consistent, practical steps in classrooms to challenge racism. The initiative aims to create a sustainable, cross-community platform for cooperation without compromising the unique identities and goals of individual organisations.

The panel featured a diverse group of educators, activists, and civil society representatives from across Cyprus, with funding support from the European Commission's Representation in Cyprus and Germany’s Federal Foreign Office. The organisers encourage other groups sharing the anti-racist education principles to join the collective effort.
