Calls Intensify for Transfer of Rialto Theatre Ownership to Limassol Municipality

Calls are growing stronger for the government to transfer ownership of the historic Rialto theatre in Limassol to the local municipality. Originally built as a modern cinema in 1930, Rialto has a rich history and hosts numerous festivals, making it a cultural landmark for the community. After being restored and reopened in 1999 by the Limassol cooperative bank, the theatre came under state control following the bank's dissolution in 2018.

Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis emphasized that the transfer would benefit the state, municipality, and the theatre itself by enabling independent management and easier access to funding. The municipality, experienced in managing theatres, has agreed to cover half of the operating expenses. Board Chairwoman Dafni Pitta Diogenous noted that state subsidies currently cover less than 20% of Rialto’s budget, underscoring the importance of securing additional funding through independent oversight.

Former chairman Kikis Kazamias supported the move, stating that since the cooperative bank no longer exists, it would be fair for ownership to be transferred to the municipality. However, concerns are mounting as the government appears to be delaying a cabinet decision on the proposal, frustrating supporters eager for the theatre's future to be secured under local management.
