Cyprus Energy Minister urges regional cooperation to unlock Eastern Mediterranean gas potential
Cyprus Energy Minister Michael Damianos emphasized the need for enhanced regional energy cooperation and utilization of existing infrastructure to tap into the Eastern Mediterranean's gas resources. Speaking at a conference in Athens, Damianos highlighted the strategic importance of a coordinated approach to deliver energy resources efficiently to international markets, especially Europe.
During the East Mediterranean Gas Forum and HELLENiQ ENERGY conference, Damianos discussed recent gas discoveries, including the Cronos and Aphrodite fields, stressing collaboration between Cyprus and Egypt to leverage Egypt’s infrastructure for transporting and processing Cypriot natural gas. He underscored that development efforts must avoid isolated projects and instead adopt comprehensive regional strategies to reduce costs and accelerate implementation.
In bilateral and trilateral meetings with Greece and Egypt’s energy ministers, Damianos reinforced plans to strengthen energy security and connectivity across the region. He also pointed to Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone's significant potential for further exploration, referencing recent discoveries at Glaucus and Pegasus in Block 10, underscoring a long-term vision for the Eastern Mediterranean energy corridor beyond natural gas.
