Cross-examination continues in 14-year-old Stylianos Constantinou suicide case at Nicosia court

The hearing into the 2019 suicide of 14-year-old Stylianos Constantinou resumed Wednesday at Nicosia district court with further cross-examination of Kyriaki Ioannou, head nurse of mental health services. Ioannou testified that information about the boy's family came from multiple sources and denied claims questioning the mother's testimony due to her mental state. She emphasized her role was to gather background information, not diagnose.

During questioning, Ioannou described Stylianos as living in a difficult family environment, with reports from educational staff and social workers describing him as "self-destructive." The case was deemed extremely urgent following these referrals. The court also addressed allegations of violence in the family, with Ioannou confirming the absence of personal accounts of violence by the father against Stylianos in her report, though incidents witnessed by the boy were recorded.

Further discussions covered inconsistencies in the mother’s statements about her relationship with the father and her mental health status, with Ioannou noting the mother was depressed but functioning at the time. The proceedings, which examine neglect claims involving both family and state services, are set to continue on October 15.
