Palaichori Oreinis council demands probe into leader's removal following community services seat dispute

The community council of Palaichori Oreinis has called for an administrative inquiry into moves to remove its leader, Tasos Michaelides, after a dispute over relocating the area’s community services seat. The council alleges the removal process began immediately after it lodged a complaint to the Cabinet about the Interior Ministry’s decision to move the Madari-Papoutsa Community Services Cluster from Palaichori to Alona.

Michaelides, who has been elected for 32 consecutive years, faces removal linked to a 2021 conviction for malicious damage, although the council claims the ruling was known to the ministry and previously deemed not an obstacle. Ministry officials counter that the case also involves assault and bodily harm, attributing delays in the removal process to a “mix-up.”

The council disputes the legality of moving the cluster seat to Alona, with only 29 residents, instead of Palaichori’s 1,400, and accuses ministry officials of leaking restricted information and damaging Michaelides’s reputation. It has requested public explanations for the decision and urged presidential intervention over the “unprecedented breach” of institutional order.
