Cyprus working-age population at 61.6%, above EU average on January 1, 2025

On January 1, 2025, Cyprus recorded a working-age population (ages 20-64) of 61.6%, surpassing the European Union average of 58.3%, according to Eurostat data. This places Cyprus among the EU countries with a relatively higher share of residents in the working-age group, representing more than three-fifths of its total population.

Eurostat treats Cyprus as a single region due to its size, unlike many EU countries divided into multiple regional levels. Across the EU, working-age population shares vary widely, with several regions, especially in Germany and island areas of Spain, exceeding 63%. Notably, the Danish capital region of Byen København and some Spanish islands reported working-age shares nearing or exceeding 68%.

Conversely, predominantly rural regions across Europe, including inland Portugal, rural France, and parts of eastern Germany, show lower working-age proportions, some even below 50%. These demographic disparities highlight notable regional differences in population structures across the EU.
