Cyprus sees 9.7% rise in registered unemployment in September driven by public administration and communication sectors

In September, Cyprus experienced a 9.7 percent increase in registered unemployment compared to the previous year, with figures released by the statistical service (Cystat) showing a rise from 7,624 to 8,366 unemployed individuals. The sectors most affected include public administration and defence, information and communication, and administrative and support services. Despite this annual rise, the number of unemployed fell month-on-month from 12,385 in August to 8,366 in September.

Wholesale and retail trade had the highest number of registered unemployed at 1,402, followed by public administration and defence with 1,050 and professional, scientific, and technical activities at 855. Other sectors reporting increases included accommodation and food services, manufacturing, education, and financial activities. Some sectors, like construction and agriculture, saw decreases in unemployment numbers.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment figure increased to 10,809 in September from 10,715 in August, indicating a continuing upward trend over the months. The number of newcomers registering as unemployed slightly decreased to 268 from 280 the year before.
