Objections raised over new central prison in Ayios Sozomenos amid overcrowding concerns

Representatives from South Nicosia-Dali and Yeri-Latsia municipalities have voiced objections to the planned location of a new central prison in Ayios Sozomenos. The justice ministry confirmed that a final decision will follow completion of Justice Minister Costas Fitiris' masterplan and comprehensive technical, environmental, and other studies. The findings will be shared with local authorities for consultation to ensure community concerns are addressed.

The proposed prison, expected to cost around €300 million, will accommodate up to 1,500 inmates, including pre-trial detainees. This project aims to relieve severe overcrowding at the current central prison in Ayios Dhometios, which houses 1,177 prisoners and operates at over 227% capacity, making it the most overcrowded facility in the EU.

Following earlier scrapped plans for a new site near Mathiatis due to cost and timing issues, the ministry emphasized ongoing dialogue with local communities to balance state needs with local concerns responsibly. The new facility is also anticipated to drive development, create jobs, and support local entrepreneurship in the area.
