New Law Provides Institutional Care for Families of Missing Persons in Cyprus
A new law now covers institutional care for parents and spouses of missing persons in Cyprus, addressing previous gaps in support, presidential commissioner Marios Hartsiotis announced. The legislation, passed in June, removes financial criteria for home care, allowing all eligible family members to benefit.
Hartsiotis highlighted that the government is also focusing on providing care for those affected by abuse during the 1974 Turkish invasion, as well as prisoners and the wounded. Efforts are underway to compile a registry to determine the exact number of beneficiaries, estimated at around 1,700 children of missing persons and 700 individuals residing or resettled in the occupied north.
State officials are currently calculating the cost of assistance, emphasizing the commitment to resolving these sensitive issues after more than five decades. House refugee committee chairman Akel MP Nikos Kettiros praised the development as a positive step forward.
