European Commission acknowledges Turkish Cypriot concerns over event cancellations by Greek Cypriots
Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman announced that the European Commission has taken note of complaints regarding Greek Cypriot efforts to cancel international events organized by Turkish Cypriots, including a children's football camp by FC Barcelona and a music festival in Kyrenia. Erhurman sent letters to both the EU and the UN highlighting these obstructions, stressing their potential negative impact on peace efforts.
The Commission emphasized the importance of fostering trust and dialogue between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities, referencing the 2004 EU Council decision aimed at ending the isolation of Turkish Cypriots. Meanwhile, Greek Cypriot officials maintain that their actions reflect the responsibilities of an internationally recognized state and deny exerting undue pressure to cancel events.
Erhurman criticized what he described as a prolonged Greek Cypriot diplomatic campaign and expressed concern over the effects on young people in both communities, advocating for opportunities and peace rather than division and exclusion.
