Cyprus advances research and innovation at 23rd STS Forum in Kyoto
Cyprus showcased its research and innovation agenda on the global stage at the 23rd Science and Technology in Society Forum in Kyoto, Japan, with Chief Scientist Demetris Skourides representing the country. Skourides emphasized the importance of policies that maximize the benefits of emerging technologies while promoting basic research, faster knowledge transfer, and enhanced international cooperation. He also highlighted the need to strengthen ties between governments, universities, research institutions, and businesses to accelerate the commercialization of scientific knowledge.
Cyprus has improved its ranking on the European Innovation Scoreboard 2026, moving to 16th among EU member states with a notable 4.1-point score increase, positioning the country as a leader in innovation activities among small and medium-sized enterprises. During the forum, Skourides held bilateral talks with counterparts from Egypt, Argentina, and Slovenia to explore deeper cooperation in science and innovation.
The forum provides Cyprus with a strategic platform to bolster international research collaborations, support its ambition as a regional innovation hub, and elevate the global profile of its innovation ecosystem. Skourides, who has chaired Cyprus’ Research and Innovation Foundation since September 2023, continues to prioritize artificial intelligence, deep tech, and enhanced linkages between researchers and industry.
