Cyprus intensifies measures against unauthorized medical practice and alternative therapies

Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides, Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides, and the Pancyprian Medical Association (CyMA) met to discuss strengthening cooperation, enhancing controls on health services, and imposing tougher penalties on impersonating medical professionals. Key legislative amendments are planned to target unauthorized medical practice, drawing on Greece's existing models.

The CyMA highlighted concerns about unlicensed medical practitioners, including foreigners qualified abroad but unlicensed in Cyprus, and the rise of alternative therapy centers posing risks to patient safety. Recent public attention focused on the controversial treatment of plasmapheresis following a high-profile death has prompted calls for stricter supervision.

President Christodoulides expressed strong governmental support for these measures. The Health Ministry has completed mapping of dubious medical centers and is coordinating with state bodies to implement regulations that ensure health services are provided only at scientifically accredited centers by qualified staff, aiming to safeguard public health and improve healthcare quality.
