Teachers’ unions express skepticism ahead of meeting on planned teaching appointment reforms

Teachers’ trade unions Poed, Oelmek, and Oltek have announced they will meet with Education Minister Athena Michaelidou on Tuesday to discuss the government’s proposed changes to the appointment process for teachers in state schools. However, the unions approach the meeting “with concern” and are “not particularly optimistic” about reaching an agreement.

The unions criticized the existing legislation as flawed and warned that the government’s reforms risk creating further issues. They called for a “fair and comprehensive proposal” and threatened to hold a protest outside the presidential palace on Thursday if no agreement is reached. Union leaders also expressed frustration with delays and perceived lack of transparency from the ministry regarding promised proposals.

Education Minister Michaelidou has emphasized that the reforms aim to support teachers and enhance educational opportunities for students. The plan includes introducing a written examination for teacher candidates, combining exam scores with professional experience to determine appointments. Despite the government’s assurances, union leaders remain concerned about the impact on teacher appointments and the stability of full-day schools amid the ongoing uncertainty.
