Cyprus plans stricter penalties for medical impersonation following government-PIS talks

The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, met with the Board of the Cyprus Medical Association (PIS) to discuss strengthening dialogue and enhancing controls over healthcare services. A key outcome is the move towards stricter penalties for the impersonation of medical professionals, a legislative amendment modeled after reforms in Greece.

Concerns were raised about individuals performing medical acts without qualifications, as well as licensed doctors practicing without valid permits in Cyprus. The government is coordinating with the Ministry of Health and relevant bodies to enforce stricter oversight and ensure that health services are provided only by licensed centers and qualified personnel.

PIS President Petros Agathangelou described the meeting as constructive and emphasized that scientific knowledge from PIS members will guide future health policies. Both parties agreed on urgent legislative measures, especially targeting unlicensed alternative therapies and illegal use of the medical association's logo, to protect public health and patient safety.
