Health Minister highlights sport's role in addiction prevention at veteran football tournament

Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides emphasized the importance of sport and prevention in combating addiction during a press conference ahead of the 22nd annual veteran football tournament against drugs. The event gathers veteran players from Apoel, Omonia, Olympiacos Nicosia, and the Cyprus Referees Association, and is held in memory of former GSP director Phivos Constantinides.

Charalambides highlighted that football can effectively spread the message of addiction prevention, especially to young people. He stressed the need for consistent support, reliable information, family assistance, and meaningful communication to tackle addiction. He also acknowledged the difficulties faced by individuals struggling with addiction and their families, emphasizing the crucial role of societal support.

The tournament’s slogan, “My goal is life, not my life a target,” underlines how sport offers young people constructive outlets while promoting self-confidence, discipline, cooperation, and respect for rules. The health ministry supports the initiative, affirming that prevention efforts are most effective when combined with active societal involvement.
