Turkish Cypriot electricity workers strike over safety concerns and missing financial reports at Kib-Tek

Turkish Cypriot electricity workers, represented by the trade union El-Sen, initiated a strike following a serious injury incident at a transformer station and ongoing concerns about safety and transparency at the Turkish Cypriot electricity authority, Kib-Tek. The strike began after a worker remained in intensive care due to an explosion, prompting demands for better protective gear and answers regarding five years of missing financial statements from Kib-Tek.

Workers barricaded the entrance to Kib-Tek’s Nicosia headquarters, preventing board members’ access. El-Sen leader Ahmet Tugcu confronted board member Baris Tilki about lack of investment, safety provisions, and alleged conflicts of interest linked to Tilki. Later, tensions escalated inside the building, leading to a scuffle and the disruption of a journalist’s work, with the journalist filing a police complaint. Tugcu vowed the strike would continue unless the union’s demands are addressed.

Further controversy surrounds alleged bribery demands by Kib-Tek’s chairman Gursel Uzun involving scrap metal auctions, which he denies, promising legal action against the reporting newspaper. The union also seeks transparent hiring and promotion processes, proper work attire, and removal of personnel involved in the reported attack on the journalist.
