Cyprus Tax Department issues second warnings to 420 businesses for receipt violations and non-card payments
Cyprus’s Tax Department has issued second warning notices to 420 businesses, including hairdressers, barbers, cafes, and watersports operators, for failing to issue receipts or refusing card payments. This move is part of an intensified campaign enforcing a new tax reform, which allows authorities to seal business premises that do not comply with tax regulations. After an initial 15-day deadline, many businesses remained non-compliant and have now been given an additional 10 days to rectify their violations.
If the breaches continue, a third notice will be issued, followed by potential closure of premises for 10 days, extendable by 20 days if non-compliance persists. This sealing measure will also apply to businesses owing over €20,000 in various taxes and, from 2027, to those failing to file specific tax returns. Since July, Tax Department inspections have taken place across tourist areas, uncovering a 60% breach rate initially; however, most businesses complied after follow-up visits. The enforcement campaign will continue intensively with round-the-clock inspections to ensure adherence to tax laws.
