Hundreds Protest Asphalt Plant Relocation in Mitsero Over Health and Environmental Concerns

Hundreds of residents from eight communities gathered on Sunday to protest the ongoing relocation of an asphalt plant to Mitsero. The demonstrators demanded an immediate halt to the works, citing serious public health risks and the need to protect the rights of local children to clean air and a safe environment. The protest took place on the Ayios Ioannis to Kato Moni road, the site where the plant construction has already begun.

Community leaders expressed frustration over what they called the state's indifference to the health of approximately 15,000 inhabitants, highlighting longstanding concerns about environmental pollution in the area. Marios Makriyiannis, a leader from Kato Moni, criticized the decision as politically and socially negligent, emphasizing that the region already hosts numerous industrial facilities.

Former Ecologists MP George Perdikis supported the protesters, noting that the community had resisted the plant for six years and that there was no need for an additional facility given the existing eight asphalt plants in operation. Students also took part in the opposition, staging a walkout during school hours last Friday. The group Communities in Action urged authorities to reconsider the plant relocation, stressing that promises made by the government must be upheld beyond election periods.
