Communities await Supreme Court decision on suspension of asphalt plant works in Mitseros

Representatives and residents from eight affected communities are expected to gather outside the Supreme Court on Monday as it prepares to decide on a request to suspend the construction of an asphalt plant in the Mitseros area. The plant, which is being relocated from Chery, has already begun installation work, prompting widespread community protests and concerns about environmental and health impacts.

The protest, held on Sunday morning near the Saint John – Kato Moni road, involved residents and members of the initiative group 'Communities in Action' calling for a halt to the project. The affected communities include Mitseros, Agroekipia, Malounda, Arediou, Agios Ioannis, Kato Moni, Orunda, and Menoyko. Leaders expressed worries about the area's existing heavy industrial activity and potential risks from additional pollution and carcinogenic particles linked to the plant.

Agroekipia’s Community Leader Sotiris Kyriakou described the peaceful protest as successful and voiced optimism about the court issuing a suspension order. He emphasized the need for a government dialogue and a meeting with the President to address the concerns comprehensively. Plans for further legal appeals and continued community mobilization were also mentioned as next steps to protect local health and environment.
