Seven missing persons' remains found in 2026 as Cyprus advances identification efforts

In 2026, the remains of seven missing persons have been recovered, and 20 new identifications made, according to Presidential Commissioner Marios Hartsiotis. Out of 1,619 missing individuals, 859 have now been identified, leaving 760 cases unresolved. Forty of the 77 missing Greek nationals have also been identified, with more results expected by year's end.

The government has approved the construction of a permanent anthropological laboratory and an ossuary, along with a meeting place for relatives and a small church. A one million euro fund has been allocated for specialized genetic testing of chemically preserved bones, using cutting-edge sequencing technology at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.

Hartsiotis maintains regular contact with relatives' organizations both in Cyprus and Greece and ensures families have access to their loved ones' files. Starting in 2026, the results of ongoing efforts will be made public annually to enhance transparency and accelerate the search for missing persons, providing answers to affected families. Efforts also continue at the European level, particularly concerning Greek nationals missing from conflict areas such as Assia.
