Society of Cypriot Studies Celebrates 90 Years Preserving Cyprus’s Greek Identity and Cultural Heritage

The Society of Cypriot Studies marks its 90th anniversary, continuing its mission to document and promote Cyprus’s Greek identity and Byzantine heritage. Founded in 1936, the Society operates the Cyprus Folk Art Museum, home to over 5,000 artifacts including textiles, paintings, icons, and traditional crafts. It actively collaborates with educational and research institutions, hosts international conferences, and supports young scholars and artists.

In celebration of European Heritage Days 2026, the museum will screen a student-made documentary titled 'The Art of Basket Weaving in Cyprus: A Disappearing Treasure' on October 21. Created by Pancyprian Gymnasium students, the film explores traditional basket weaving techniques and won first prize at an international student film competition. The event will also feature a basket-weaving workshop and traditional music performances.

The Society’s extensive efforts encompass a historical and photographic archive, a continuing annual journal since 1937, and numerous international congresses fostering research and cultural protection. Its origins trace back to politically turbulent times in 1936, with founders committed to preserving Cyprus’s cultural and historical identity amid repressive measures.
