Illegal rental ring at Larnaca’s Filanta complex resumes water theft amid threats to management

A criminal ring illegally renting about 30 flats at Larnaca’s Filanta complex has resumed tapping into the water supply, causing significant losses and generating threats against the management committee. The group, reportedly composed of foreign nationals, rents flats without owners’ consent while stealing electricity and water through exposed meters, according to Marios Fotiou, head of the complex’s management committee.

Despite repeated cuts of electricity connections by the committee, the illegal ring has reconnected the supply each time, with threatening phone calls directed at committee members to deter further action. The complex, partly declared dangerous by local authorities, has seen tense developments following a fatal immigration raid, with migrants occupying sections illegally and converting parts into businesses and a childcare nursery.

The management committee has appealed to multiple authorities, including justice and social welfare departments, urging police intervention and the deportation of those involved. Complaints highlight severe living conditions for tenants and stress the urgent need for safety and legal enforcement at the Filanta complex.
