Cyprus Foreign Minister thanks outgoing Israeli Ambassador amid mixed reactions to Cyprus-Israel ties

Cyprus Foreign Minister Konstantinos Kombos expressed gratitude to Israel’s outgoing Ambassador Oren Anolik for his significant contribution to strengthening the Cyprus-Israel strategic partnership over the past five years. The farewell meeting, held recently, also saw Kombos wishing Anolik success in his future endeavors. Additionally, Kombos spoke at the inaugural event of the Cyprus Chapter of the Transatlantic Friends of Israel, highlighting Cyprus's strategic relations with both the United States and Israel.

However, the deepening ties between Cyprus and Israel have faced opposition from various civil society groups. On September 10, the Cyprus Peace Council and other anti-war organizations protested outside the Presidential Palace against a visit by Israeli President Isaac Herzog. Protesters argued that Cyprus's close alignment with Israel might hinder efforts to resume talks on the longstanding Cyprus dispute. The opposition party AKEL supported these protests, describing the visit as a provocation.

Activists from BDS Cyprus and United for Palestine Nicosia have also held a week-long vigil outside the palace to demand that Cyprus end all military and economic cooperation with Israel, calling for a complete arms embargo. These demonstrations underscore the contentious nature of Cyprus-Israel relations within segments of Cypriot society.
