Mitsero Students Walk Out to Protest Asphalt Plant Relocation Amid Planned Demonstrations

Students in Mitsero walked out of classes during the first two periods on Friday to protest the planned relocation of an asphalt plant to their community. This follows growing concerns from residents about the plant's potential health impacts and environmental burden. A community meeting is scheduled for Friday evening to discuss the issue further, and a peaceful demonstration is planned for Sunday morning near the construction site.

Elli Mesaritou, head of the Mitsero primary school parents’ association, expressed frustration over the lack of proper consultation with residents and criticized authorities for relocating the plant from a residential area in Dhali to Mitsero despite public health concerns. More than 150 nuisance facilities, including quarries and pig farms, already operate in the area, raising fears that the asphalt plant will severely harm the community’s health and environment.

Mesaritou also highlighted broken promises from President Nikos Christodoulides to address the issue and meet with residents. With mounting opposition, locals warned that if peaceful efforts fail, they may escalate protests to include road blockades during working days, potentially disrupting local businesses and market activity.
