European Commission Issues Formal Warning to Cyprus for Non-Compliance with E-Waste Directive
The European Commission has sent a reasoned opinion to Cyprus and six other EU member states for failing to fully transpose the waste electrical and electronic equipment directive into national law. The directive had to be implemented by October 2025.
This formal notice is the second stage of the EU infringement procedure, highlighting the breach of obligations by Cyprus and others. The countries involved include Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Luxembourg, Poland, Romania, and Spain.
If Cyprus and the other states do not comply within two months, the Commission may escalate the issue to the European Court of Justice. The infringement proceedings were initiated in November 2025 to address these transposition delays.
