Nicosia local government blames government delays for EU Court referral over waste management

The Nicosia local government organisation (EOA) has accused the Cypriot government of delays and poor planning that led to Cyprus being referred to the EU’s Court of Justice over waste management issues. The European Commission launched an infringement procedure after finding that 21% of Cypriot waste is sent to landfills untreated, with inadequate facilities for mixed municipal waste.

The EOA criticized the state's inadequate planning despite the creation of local government organisations (EOAs) tasked with managing waste infrastructure, citing outdated and questionable facilities in Koshi and Pentakomo. They also highlighted a lack of communication and financial support from the government regarding over 48 circular economy projects in the Nicosia district.

The organisation urged the government to demonstrate tangible results without imposing more costs on citizens, stressing the need for comprehensive planning, operational infrastructure, and meaningful involvement of local authorities in decision-making to effectively handle waste management responsibilities.
