Turkish Cypriot leader criticizes Republic of Cyprus military buildup amid peace talks
Turkish Cypriot 'prime minister' Unal Ustel condemned the Republic of Cyprus' recent military enhancements, calling them contradictory to peace efforts. His statement followed the Independence Day military parade in Nicosia, which featured Greek F-16 jets and forces from Greece, Egypt, France, Britain, and the US, alongside the public unveiling of Israel-made Barak MX air defense systems.
Ustel argued that the military buildup and foreign troop presence run counter to reconciliation, accusing Greek Cypriot leadership of using threatening rhetoric. He reaffirmed the Turkish Cypriot position that peace negotiations cannot proceed without recognition of their sovereign equality and equal international status.
Republic officials, including President Nikos Christodoulides and Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas, maintained that the military modernization is defensive and essential for safeguarding Cyprus amid ongoing Turkish occupation and regional tensions. Greece's Defence Minister Nikos Dendias pledged continued support for Cyprus' security needs.
