Cyprus to Expand Animal Welfare Awareness Programme in Schools

Cyprus is set to expand its animal welfare awareness programme to more schools and pupils across the country, Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis announced during a visit to Aglandjia’s Fourth Primary School on World Animal Day. The initiative, launched in 2023, aims to cultivate a culture of respect and responsibility towards animals from a young age, in cooperation with the Environment and Animal Welfare Commissioner and the education ministry.

The event featured presentations of school initiatives, including "Lessons from the Dog," which educates pupils and parents on the needs and rights of companion animals through experiential activities. Environment Commissioner Ilias Myrianthous emphasized the ongoing challenges of stray and abused animals in Cyprus, stressing the need for a collective effort from citizens, authorities, and organizations to improve animal welfare.

A highlight of the programme was a demonstration with Shelby, a guide dog for the blind, illustrating how working animals assist people. The event underscored the importance of awareness, prevention, and stronger enforcement of animal protection laws, with the ultimate goal of reaching more young people and fostering lifelong respect for animal welfare.
