Kyriaki Costa's MURMUR kairos exhibition opens at Velychko Gallery in Limassol
Velychko Gallery in Limassol is hosting MURMUR kairos, a solo exhibition by Cypriot artist Kyriaki Costa, from October 9 to December 15. The exhibition features a new collection of sculpture, embroidery, and painting that explores the metaphor of the "canary in the coal mine" to address themes of warning and sacrifice in critical times. Costa's work questions societal imbalances regarding who is exposed to danger and who is protected, using sentinel species like canaries and ants to symbolize messages of resistance and cooperation.
The exhibition draws inspiration from the historical use of canaries in mining to alert workers to toxic fumes and contrasts this with ants, whose intricate nests can undermine human-made structures yet remain largely unnoticed. Costa uses ants as a metaphor for subtle yet potent forms of resistance and collaboration, inspired partly by the discovery of an ant colony behind the gallery walls during renovations.
Curated by Denise Araouzou, MURMUR kairos is open by appointment and during Limassol Art Walks. The opening night event is scheduled from 5pm to 9pm, inviting visitors to engage with this thought-provoking body of work that combines art and critical reflection on societal issues.
