New Patients Advocate Office Receives 534 Complaints in First Four Months Highlighting Care Quality and Waiting Times
Between May and August 2026, the newly established patient advocate office received a total of 534 complaints and requests, with the majority focusing on the quality of care, long waiting times, and unnecessary patient inconvenience. Patients' ombudsman Marios Charalambides noted this as a positive sign that people are utilizing the complaint mechanism effectively.
Out of the complaints, 98 written submissions concerned the quality of care, involving issues ranging from medical errors to negligence and service lapses. Long waiting times and inadequate patient information were also frequent causes of concern, alongside complaints related to accident and emergency departments. Charalambides emphasized the importance of informing patients during long waits, highlighting that lack of communication often exacerbates their distress.
To address these ongoing issues, district complaints examination committees were set up to re-evaluate unresolved cases. Despite the challenges identified, Charalambides described the mechanism as a useful tool to identify and hopefully resolve everyday healthcare problems before they escalate.
