Cyprus Agriculture Ministry Unveils New Support Measures to Boost Rural Development and Women's Employment

Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis announced further support measures to enhance access to financing and sustainable investments for Cyprus's agriculture sector. The ministry plans a broad consultation with the agricultural community on October 8 to shape the post-2027 agricultural policy, with a special focus on involving rural women to boost employment and development opportunities in the countryside.

Senekis emphasized that these measures go beyond gender equality, aiming to revive rural areas and increase productivity. The current Common Agricultural Policy strategic plan (2023-2027) allocates €454 million to support investments, the modernization of agricultural holdings, and young farmers. More than 1,200 applications have been submitted for investment funding, totaling around €200 million, alongside 267 applications from young farmers seeking support.

Highlighting local initiatives, Senekis pointed to the village of Agros, where traditional products such as rose water and local sausages have gained European recognition. These community-driven projects, supported by the EU's LEADER program, underline the significant role women play in sustaining rural economies. The ministry commits to keeping close contact with rural producers to ensure policies address the real needs of these communities.
