BAFTA-Winning Poet Explores Black Queer Joy and Identity at Queer Wave Cyprus
A BAFTA-winning poet and writer of Cypriot and Jamaican descent is gaining recognition for shifting focus from earlier themes of anger to celebrating queer love, joy, and Black queer stories. His award-winning short animation, "Two Black Boys in Paradise," challenges the typical portrayal of queer experiences by depicting a safe and joyful space for Black queer love. The film garnered over 30 awards, including the prestigious BAFTA for British Short Animation.
The creator highlighted the ongoing lack of representation for Black gay men in film and television, attributing it to financial risk aversion within the industry. Drawing from his mixed heritage, he infuses his work with elements of Cypriot and Jamaican culture, reflecting on identity, belonging, and love. Presenting at Queer Wave Cyprus, he expressed admiration for the festival’s role in supporting queer voices and communities.
His acclaimed novel, The Black Flamingo, originated from a symbolic sighting in Cyprus and explores themes of identity and self-expression. While his art is deeply personal, it resonates widely, contributing to greater visibility and understanding of Black queer experiences.
