Cyprus unemployment rate rises to 4.1% in August 2026, below EU average

Cyprus’ unemployment rate increased to 4.1% in August 2026, up from 4.0% in July, according to Eurostat data. Despite this rise, the rate remains notably below the European Union average of 6.1% and the euro area rate of 6.4%. The number of unemployed people in Cyprus was estimated at around 22,000 in August, stable compared to the previous year.

Across the EU, unemployment stayed broadly stable at 6.1%, while in the euro area it held at 6.4%, both slightly higher than one year earlier. Youth unemployment in Cyprus decreased from 13.0% in August 2025 to 11.9% in May and June 2026, though updated figures for July and August 2026 were unavailable. Women continued to experience higher unemployment rates than men both in Cyprus and the wider EU.

Overall, Eurostat’s data highlight Cyprus maintaining a relatively healthy labor market despite recent rises, in contrast to a modest increase in unemployment in the wider European economy over the past year.
