British Ministry of Defence restricts Greek Cypriot farmers in UK Sovereign Bases over security concerns

The British Ministry of Defence is limiting Greek Cypriot farmers from cultivating their plots within the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus, citing security reasons and the Crown’s ownership of the land. Agricultural Payments Commissioner Andreas Kyprianou informed Cypriot lawmakers that the British authorities refuse cultivation permissions to safeguard the areas, complicating farming activities.

Kyprianou also raised concerns about Turkish growers encroaching into the UN buffer zone, cultivating Greek Cypriot-owned land and effectively extending the ceasefire line. The Cyprus Agricultural Payments Organisation (CAPO), using satellite data, has confirmed these incursions despite previously restricting subsidies to plots within safe access zones.

While CAPO traditionally subsidised only areas accessible for onsite checks, it now uses satellite verification to support farmers even beyond the UN-approved safe access line, aiming to assist cultivation of disputed plots. The Foreign Ministry is involved in addressing the issues with British authorities, and CAPO remains committed to aiding farmers willing to work their land under challenging conditions.
