Little Gems Montessori Joins International Pilot Study Linking Montessori Education with UN Sustainable Development Goals

Little Gems Montessori Nursery in Cyprus continues its commitment to sustainability by participating in an international pilot project aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This initiative, led by Montessori Europe’s Sustainability Working Group, involves schools worldwide using a newly developed Audit Tool to explore how Montessori education supports the SDGs. Two classrooms at Little Gems, located in Nicosia and Larnaca, will take part in the research study while other classrooms maintain their engagement with the Cyprus Marine Environment Protection Association’s ECO School programme.

The pilot builds on Montessori principles, particularly Maria Montessori’s concept of Cosmic Education, which teaches children about the interconnectedness of nature, humanity, and society. The Montessori Europe Sustainability Working Group has been advancing this approach through resources such as a Sustainability Handbook and Audit Tool, presented at recent Montessori Europe Congresses. Little Gems' participation highlights how Cypriot schools can contribute to global dialogues on sustainability education, encouraging children to develop responsibility and awareness towards a more sustainable future.
