Turkey warns against unauthorized cable surveys in disputed waters amid Cyprus energy interconnector project

Turkey has issued a warning against unauthorized cable-laying or survey activities in waters it claims as part of its continental shelf, escalating tensions with the EU over the Great Sea Interconnector (GSI) project. The GSI aims to connect Cyprus to the European electricity grid via Crete and Greece, addressing Cyprus’ energy isolation as the only EU member without such a link. The Turkey warning coincided with Cyprus’ 66th independence anniversary and stressed the need for coordination with Ankara on any such operations.

The GSI’s Greece-Cyprus section, spanning roughly 900 kilometers, is a major European Commission-backed energy initiative, designated a Project of Common Interest with €657 million funding. Despite delays due to financial and geopolitical challenges, the project is expected to become operational by 2029. Recent progress includes investment by France’s Meridiam and survey agreements with Nexans to advance seabed studies, which Turkey opposes.

The dispute highlights broader maritime boundary disagreements in the Eastern Mediterranean involving Turkey, Greece, and Cyprus. The EU has condemned Turkey’s maritime claims and reaffirmed support for Cyprus’ sovereign rights. European officials, including Greek MEP Nikolas Farantouris, are calling for a firm institutional response to protect the project and member state sovereignty amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
