Health Minister urges men to seek prostate cancer screening amid rising cases in Cyprus
Health Minister Neophytos Charalambides has urged men to seek medical advice for prostate cancer screening, emphasizing the importance of overcoming fear and embarrassment associated with the disease. Speaking at a Europa Uomo event on European prostate cancer awareness day, he highlighted that prostate cancer remains the most common cancer among men in Cyprus, with an average of 726 new cases recorded annually. Last year, it was the second leading cause of death among men in the country.
Charalambides stressed that screening decisions should be personalized, based on discussions with a doctor considering factors such as age and family history. He also mentioned that the government is working towards implementing organized national screening programs based on prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, supplemented by further diagnostics when necessary. The ministry's approach prioritizes early detection alongside providing reliable information and ensuring equal access to healthcare services.
The Minister praised Europa Uomo for fostering open discussions about prostate cancer, raising awareness of risk factors, and integrating patient experiences into public health policy debates. He underlined the need for screening programs to be data-driven and carefully targeted to maximize their effectiveness and provide continuity of care following diagnosis.
