Cyprus Environmental Movement condemns ELAM's parliamentary initiative targeting environmental activists
The Cyprus Environmental Movement has strongly accused ELAM of trying to criminalise environmental organisations and activists following a parliamentary initiative by the party's MPs. ELAM proposed an agenda item to assess the impact of environmental groups' activities ahead of a parliamentary Environment Committee session. Conservation group CABS has urged MPs to reject this proposal.
The Movement denounced the initiative as part of a wider European far-right trend aimed at separating the protection of nature from the people defending it, branding environmental defenders as enemies. It accused ELAM of serving narrow political interests, siding with poachers, and undermining green policies, particularly highlighting issues such as the illegal trapping of ambelopoulia songbirds.
Highlighting recent successful anti-poaching operations coordinated by gamekeepers, police, and NGOs, the Movement called on all democratic forces in society to oppose this anti-democratic move. It emphasized that environmental activism represents "the voice of the Earth itself" and vowed to defend fundamental democratic rights against intimidation by political actors.
