Agriculture Minister to Present Revised Irrigation Water Allocation Plan to Cabinet
Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis will submit a revised proposal on irrigation water allocation to the cabinet on Wednesday, reflecting current hydrological conditions and ongoing water infrastructure projects. The plan aims to improve water management for the agricultural sector, which heavily depends on water availability.
Senekis emphasized the critical importance of water access for developing Cyprus’ primary sector and attracting younger farmers, noting the concerning average age of professional farmers stands at 63. The revised proposal incorporates completed projects and upcoming initiatives, including the completion of three additional desalination plants by 2031 and increased water supply through the Southern Conveyor Project, targeting crops like potatoes and trees.
The minister also highlighted that water allocation remains a dynamic issue, with adjustments possible later in the year depending on hydrological developments and agricultural needs. Continuous monitoring will guide any future interventions to ensure sustainable water use in farming.
