Residents of Akrotiri protest against planned antenna installation near British Bases
Residents of Akrotiri held a protest on Tuesday against the planned installation of antennas near the British Bases’ radio station in their village. Organised by the Akrotiri Residents’ Coordinating Action Committee, the demonstration highlighted concerns over potential health risks and the impact on local quality of life. The protest’s key message was "our health is not up for negotiation," urging widespread community participation.
In response, a Sovereign Base Areas (SBA) spokesperson stated the Administration respects the right to peaceful protest and provided details about the ongoing infrastructure modernisation project at Akrotiri Salt Lake, dubbed Project Atlas. The project involves installing new equipment and upgrading infrastructure, with all works contingent on environmental assessments and public consultations that have yet to begin.
The spokesperson also referenced a study indicating that no increased health risks, such as cancer or congenital abnormalities, have been linked to radiofrequency fields from existing systems. The SBA Administration is open to co-funding an independent study and plans to strengthen monitoring of emissions by installing additional units across the Salt Lake area to ensure transparency and safety for the local community.
