The French ambassador to the United Nations, Jerome Bonnafont, affirmed that a solution to the Cyprus problem exists and emphasized support for UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres’ efforts to restart negotiations. Bonnafont highlighted the importance of implementing confidence-building measures and maintaining the integrity of the buffer zone as key conditions for progress. He praised Guterres’ recent visit to Cyprus and the role of his personal envoy, Maria Angela Holguin, in facilitating dialogue.
Bonnafont expressed hope that the new Turkish Cypriot authorities, elected last October, would engage in discussions with the Republic of Cyprus, although this has not yet occurred. France is actively encouraging cooperation from the northern authorities and Turkey to advance peace talks, noting that the broader population appears supportive but political courage is needed.
Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman stressed the need to build trust on the ground before formal talks can resume. He urged President Nikos Christodoulides to avoid actions that could undermine trust, criticizing recent arrests over property issues and Cyprus' deepening ties with Israel as obstacles to creating a conducive atmosphere for negotiations.
