Cyprus Beaches to Lack Lifeguard Coverage Due to Hourly-Paid Government Workers' Strike on Thursday
Beaches across Cyprus will be without lifeguard coverage on Thursday as around 11,000 hourly-paid workers, including 6,500 government employees, stage a 24-hour nationwide strike. The interior ministry warned that lifeguard services in all districts will be affected and urged the public to exercise caution when engaging in sea activities.
The strike is part of an ongoing dispute over the renewal of the collective agreement for hourly-paid government workers covering 2025-2027, with unions demanding an 8% general pay increase. The finance ministry has opposed the demand, warning it would cost €50 million over three years and could exceed €300 million annually if extended across the public sector, which the government deems financially unsustainable.
Despite five meetings and partial concessions by the government, unions proceeded with the strike after talks stalled. The finance ministry highlighted that most hourly-paid workers have seen salary rises averaging 25% in recent years and noted that only 68 out of 6,500 employees currently earn minimum wage.
