Larnaca Tourism Company joins EU project to combat gender-based violence in hospitality sector
The Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company (ETAP) has joined SAFEHOST, a European initiative aimed at preventing and addressing gender-based violence within the hospitality industry. Funded by the EU’s CERV programme, the project involves partners from Cyprus, Greece, Italy, Spain, and Denmark, working together to equip hotels and frontline staff with tools to identify and safely refer victims of gender-based violence.
SAFEHOST will assess current hotel practices and challenges faced by civil society organisations, leading to the development of a tailored training programme for hospitality workers. This programme will emphasize recognising warning signs, sensitive response, and safe referral processes. Additionally, the project plans to unite over 60 hotels through cooperation protocols, strengthening links between the tourism sector and specialised support services.
A key innovation of the project includes a multilingual mobile app featuring an AI chatbot to provide information and direct access to support services. Accompanying this will be an information campaign aimed at hotel guests and the wider public. ETAP highlights the crucial role hospitality staff play in identifying vulnerable individuals away from their usual environments, underlining the importance of their involvement in this initiative.
